South Dakota 1 Goldback - Pax (Peace) - 1/1000th Troy Ounce 24k Gold
Discover the virtue of Peace with the South Dakota 1 Goldback featuring Pax, beautifully depicted as a Lakota Native American woman performing the sacred hoop dance. This meaningful design celebrates the profound message of finding peace with everything around us by treating all as friends and relatives.
The Story: Inspired by a personal demonstration given to the artist, this artwork features a Lakota woman wearing traditional regalia that represents her name, tribe, family, heritage, and personal passions. The Lakota performer explained that her people call themselves "The Friendly Ones," with their heritage name translating to "Alliance of Friends" - a banner featured toward the bottom of this denomination.
During the hoop dance demonstration, the woman described the importance of finding and creating peace with everything around her by treating all as friends and relatives. She emphasized that true peace comes from including every person regardless of their creed, race, age, or other differences, as well as animals, plants, and even the elements in this same spirit of kinship.
The sacred Bear Butte, or "Mato Paha," rises majestically in the background, while the traditional cancega drum and Sacred Hoop (Medicine wheel) represent the cyclical nature of life. The seven sacred elements - land, air, water, rocks, animals, plants, and fire - are carefully represented throughout the design.
In the bottom right corner blooms the Prairie Crocus (Pasque flower), South Dakota's state flower, known for being the first plant to bloom in spring and living through all cycles of life in just two weeks - symbolizing our brief but meaningful lives and the generations who came before us.
Enduring Principle: "Seek Peace"
The artwork reminds us that peace is a choice that comes from being in harmony with the people and things around us, just as the Lakota woman explained to the artist during her inspiring demonstration.
Cultural Significance: This design honors the wisdom of the Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota peoples - names that all mean "The Friendly Ones" in their respective languages. Their teachings remind us that true peace extends beyond human relationships to include all of creation in a spirit of respect and kinship.
